Each year one in six young people between the ages of 6-17 experience a mental health disorder.[1] One half of adults who struggle with a mental health disorder began at age 14, while 75% began by age 24 (Mental Health First Aid, 2020). These mental disorders include but are not limited to attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), anxiety, and behavior disorders.
Much like drug abuse, mental health issues cannot always be targeted to just one specific reason. Yet, research gives numerous reasons as to why young people alone battle mental health problems:[2]
· Exposure to adversity
· Pressure to conform with peers and exploration of identity
· Media influence and gender norms
· Quality of home life
· Relationships with peers
· Violence-particularly sexual violence or bullying
· Harsh parenting and severe and socioeconomic problems
TORCH Teen Center aims to partner with local services and opportunities to guide teenagers to receive the help needed to overcome the specific mental health disorder they are currently battling. Ultimately, the center strives to build this foundation on the Word of God and build upon that as needed. Young people all around us are often hiding behind these disorders unable to cope with them or function in life. The staff longs to help these teenagers to learn to live healthy lives by overcoming these battles or simply to learn to live with positive resources.
