Drug abuse among children between the ages of 12-20 is a rapidly growing problem. Although, like many problems that arouse in life, there is not just one simple reason as to why drug abuse among young people occurs or is greatly increasing, Teen Rehab of New York, New York, list numerous reasons as to why adolescent and teenagers begin using drugs. [1]
1.) Stress
2.) Fitting in and Peer Pressure
3.) Self-medicating and Escape
4.) Misinformation
5.) Modeling Behavior
6.) Curiosity and Boredom
7.) Rebellion and Addiction
The age of legal drinking in the United States is 21 years of age. Yet, studies find that under-age drinking is the result of one-tenth the consumption of all alcohol in America.[2] Alcohol, marijuana, and tobacco are substances most used by adolescents. [3] Approximately two-thirds of students have tried alcohol by the time they enter the twelfth grade.5 About half of students between 9th and 12th grade admit to having tried marijuana.[4] Nearly 40% of high school students report having tried cigarettes. [5] Among 12th graders, about 20% state they use prescription drugs without a prescription. 5
TORCH Teen Center’s aim is to combat these statistics by offering a faith-based recovery program. The focus will be to help teenagers get to the root of the problem and overcome their personal battle with drugs. The center will point teenagers to positive methods to cope with the root of the issue. This program will allow for both large, group sessions and smaller, individual sessions. The large group session will include all students who register for the recovery program. The smaller, individual sessions will be divided from the large group, separating males and females. During these sessions, teens will watch videos, listen to speakers, and communicate their struggles in hopes to move forward from their own addiction with drugs.
This program is also for teens who may not be involved in drugs but simply want to be informed of the dangers of drug abuse.
